Music being felt via one’s back, travelling all over one’s body right to the fingertips: this is the experience Sonic Bed_London offers. By lying down in this very special bed, visitors can genuinely feel music penetrating their body, an experience that goes well beyond just listening. The musical composition Bend was conceived and performed by Kaffe Matthews on a Theremin, one of the oldest electronic music instruments (1919), which has the distinctive feature of being able to produce music without actually being touched by the player. The original score plays around with a perpetually moving matrix, composing and re-composing the parts, without repetition, generating an infinite composition. The Sonic Bed has been created for various countries, including China, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, and is presented today at the Cube Festival.
Kaffe Matthews lives and works in London. Since 1990 she has been making and performing new electro-acoustic music worldwide. Acknowledged as a pioneer in the field of electronic improvisation and live composition, Kaffe has released 6 solo CDs on the label Annette Works. She has been awarded many prizes, including an award at the Ars Electronica Festival in 2006 in the electronic music category for the work Sonic Bed_London. This installation was so successful it led to the creation of a research collective, Music for Bodies, which explores the relationship between sound, architecture, furniture, clothing and the vibrations of the human body to create a new form of music and a new way of listening to it.
