GLOWING PATHFINDER BUGS, Squidsoup

Interactive installation, 2008, United Kingdom

"Glowing pathfinder bugs" SquidsoupThe “Glowing Pathfinder Bug” appears to be hybrid centipede, or a kind of caterpillar. It lives in the sandy deserts of Faroffistan and has the habit of roaming around small trenches and paths. It is very sociable and loves to meet other bugs; when two scouts meet, strange things may happen! Squidsoup recreates at the Cube Festival the usual habitat of this distinctive bug. To play with them, users must dig paths, trenches and gullies in the sand so that the bugs can move about and meet. If spectators are lucky, they might witness their unique and wonderful instantaneous metamorphosis. But careful, the “Glowing Pathfinder Bug” is small and very shy. Sudden movements might frighten them, and they might also turn out to be very fast.

Squidsoup is a British collective specialising in interactive immersive installations integrated in 3D environments. Their work mixes sound, light and real and virtual spaces to produce immersive and emotional environments. They explore the modes and effects of interactivity, looking to make digital experiences where meaningful and creative interaction can occur.
